ASUS P750: A Review

By

We all know ASUS as the company that makes computer parts. ASUSTEK ventured into the mobile phone industry with their range of PDA phones. The latest entrant the P750 is a welcome change from the regular names in the PDA phone category. The phone comes with car kit, a 3 MP camera, a 520 MHz processor and Windows Mobile 6 Professional. Though packed in an ordinary body, the phone is in no way ordinary in features. GPS has always been a great feature of ASUS phones and the P750 carries forward this trend with a dedicated SiRF Star III chipset.

The Basics:
Design and Display:
The phone comes with packed in a 130 gm body with a solid exterior.  This handset comes in a black candy bar design and feels a bit bulky in the hands. The phone offers navigation through the screen and through the twenty key ordinary keypad. The navigation buttons and the joystick are placed below the screen.
The phone comes with a 2.6 inch TFT touch screen that supports 65k colors. The screen, though small by the current standards, also doubles up as an input device when coupled with the stylus.

Multimedia:
The 3.2 MP camera, bundled in to the phone is capable of both still images and video. Autofocus ensures you always have a great shot with the camera. The absence of a flash is a major drawback of the phone and is on the wish list for the next release.
A secondary VGA camera is also provided on the front to enable video calling.
The standard Windows Media player is capable of handling both music and video. The phone comes with a 2.5 mm jack for external headphones or speakers.

GPS:
The phone’s best feature is it's built in GPS. The build in dedicated SiRF Star III chipset is one of the best in the market and the phone comes with some very good software that makes utmost use of this chipset. Travelog is an application that is lets you track your journey and update the information on Google earth. LocationCourier sends out via SMS details of your co ordinates to predetermined contacts. The killer here is the lack of built in maps. If you have decided to go in for this phone, make sure you have kept budget for buying maps externally.

Email and Organizer:
The phone comes with a standard organizer with a built in calendar to let you plan your day. The phone also integrates seamlessly with Microsoft Outlook and other POP3 and SMTP servers.
