Heaven by the cooler
55She looked like an angel in her white flowing salwar and blue dupatta. Her
gaze, meeting mine, made its way straight to my heart as I stood there dumb
founded. Before I could get my senses back, she said,
"How’s the coffee today. Yesterday it was bad."
The ground had suddenly started moving below me, swallowing me up. It was
the kind of feeling you got when you were caught stealing. She had been the
object of my stares for almost fifteen days now. With dark long hair, a
nose that could put Cleopatra to shame and a colour so fair, the sun would
feel jealous, she was the very definition of "Angel". I knew what time she
came, what time she went out to have water or coffee and I made sure, I
would be there, every time.
And today was the culmination of those efforts, an achievement. But somehow
I was unable to respond. I mumbled something about the coffee being bitter.
"Do you like bitter coffee?" She continued. Tactfully escaping the usual
greetings routine, it seemed that she was getting back for me staring
unabashed at her.
"No. But I guess it’s free." This time I did manage a smile.
"I wish I could stay longer. But I am moving out of this place tomorrow and
I wanted my last coffee to be with you. I have always seen you here and I
know how much you like me. I just wanted to let you know it's reciprocal.
Maybe if it was another place and another time, things would have been
different." Then she turned and walked away.
And I just stood there, dumbfounded. I had just been touched by an
angel.....by the cooler. Maybe heaven felt this way.
